IPTV on a Smart TV: Samsung, LG & Android TV

Whether IPTV works on a smart TV depends entirely on its operating system, not its brand or price. TVs running Android TV or Google TV install a player from the Play Store in two minutes. TVs running Samsung's Tizen or LG's webOS have no comparable store for IPTV players, and the sideload workarounds expire. Own one of those and the realistic answer is a $30–$60 streaming stick in an HDMI port.

Quick answer: check Settings → About for the platform name. Android TV / Google TV → install TiviMate or IPTV Smarters from the Play Store. Tizen or webOS → try the TV's own store first, expect nothing, then use a stick. Do not spend an evening in a TV service menu unless you enjoy it.

First, Identify the Platform

Brand tells you almost nothing — Samsung builds Tizen, LG builds webOS, and everyone else mixes Android TV with their own systems.

TVPlatformPlayer ecosystem
Sony, TCL, Hisense, Philips (most models)Google TV / Android TVFull Play Store
SamsungTizenSamsung store only — very few IPTV players
LGwebOSLG Content Store — limited; sideloading possible but temporary
VizioSmartCastApp-only, no sideloading
Roku-based TVs (TCL, Hisense, Sharp)Roku OSChannel store — no general APK installs
Fire TV Edition TVsFire OS or Vega OSAppstore only; Fire OS allows sideloading

To confirm: Settings → Support / About / System information. The model number tells you the year, which matters for app availability more than the brand does.

What Changed in 2026

The old advice — "search your TV's store for IPTV Smarters" — is now unreliable, and following it is why people conclude their TV is broken.

Three things shifted:

  1. Players have been pulled from app stores. IPTV Smarters Pro, the app most guides tell you to install, has been removed from several stores or made unavailable in certain regions during 2026. Users report it missing from Samsung stores entirely on some models and years.
  2. Availability is now model- and region-specific. Two identical-looking Samsung TVs bought in different countries can show different app catalogues.
  3. TV firmware updates can remove sideloaded apps. Enabling developer mode to install something is not a permanent install.

The practical consequence: on a smart TV, "which app?" is the wrong first question. "Does my TV's platform allow installing one at all?" comes first.

Path A — Android TV / Google TV (the easy one)

If your TV runs Google TV or Android TV, the process is identical to any Android device.

  1. Update the TV. Settings → System → About → System update. App compatibility is firmware-dependent.
  2. Open the Play Store on the TV and search for your player. TiviMate IPTV Player and IPTV Smarters Pro are both published there when available in your region.
  3. Install and open it, then grant storage access — the player needs it for guide data.
  4. Add the playlist. Choose M3U if your provider gave one long URL, or Xtream Codes if you got a server address, username and password.
  5. Add the EPG (XMLTV URL) and set the correct timezone offset.
  6. Favourite the channels you watch so the guide does not open on channel 6,000.

Our TiviMate setup guide walks through that flow screen by screen, including the guide settings that most people never find.

Path B — Samsung Tizen (no Play Store, limited apps)

Samsung TVs do not run Android and have no access to Google Play. Everything comes from Samsung's own store, which is curated and much smaller.

What this means in practice:

  • The Play Store instructions you find online do not apply. There is no Play Store app on a Samsung TV.
  • If the app is not in the Samsung store, there is no normal install path. Regional and model-year restrictions are common, and an app present on a 2024 set may be missing on a 2022 one.
  • Sideloading exists but is developer-grade. It requires Tizen Studio on a PC, a Samsung developer certificate, and enabling developer mode on the TV. Samsung documents the process for app developers, not for viewers, and it can be invalidated by firmware updates.
  • USB installs are not a general solution. Tizen does not install arbitrary app packages from a drive the way Android does.

The honest assessment: if your player is not in the Samsung store, a stick is faster, cheaper and more stable than the sideload route. For reference on how the platform's app model works, see Samsung's developer documentation.

Path C — LG webOS (possible, but temporary)

LG's webOS is more open than Tizen, and there is a real developer path — but it comes with an expiry date that most tutorials bury.

How it works:

  1. Create a free account at LG's webOS developer site.
  2. On the TV, install Developer Mode from the LG Content Store and sign in.
  3. Install the webOS CLI on a computer, connect to the TV, and install the .ipk package.
  4. The app works — for as long as Developer Mode remains enabled.

The catch: Developer Mode is time-limited, and turning it off removes sideloaded apps. When the session lapses you re-enable it and reinstall. That is fine for experimenting with an open-source player; it is a poor foundation for the TV your household uses every evening.

LG's own documentation is the authority here: App testing with Developer Mode.

Path D — Treat the TV as a Screen

This is the recommendation for Tizen, webOS, SmartCast and Roku TVs, and it is not a cop-out: it is what most people with those TVs end up doing anyway.

DevicePriceWhy it beats sideloading
Google TV streamer$30–$60Real Play Store, full player choice, updates handled for you
Fire TV Stick (Fire OS model)$30–$60Sideloading supported; see Fire Stick setup
Android TV box$50–$150Ethernet, more RAM, better sustained decoding

The TV keeps doing what it is good at — the panel, HDR, audio passthrough to a soundbar. The stick handles the software. Total cost is less than a year of most subscriptions, and it removes an entire category of "it worked yesterday" problems.

If the app behaves correctly but the streams do not, the problem is not the TV. Work through IPTV Not Working for a layer-by-layer diagnosis.

Which IPTV App Is Best on a Smart TV?

Match the app to the platform, not to a "best of" list:

  • Android TV / Google TV: TiviMate for a cable-style guide and remote-first navigation, IPTV Smarters Pro if you want something simpler. Both take M3U and Xtream logins.
  • Samsung / LG: install whichever player your TV's store actually offers, and check it supports both login types before subscribing to anything. If none does, use a stick.
  • Roku: there is no general APK path. Use a dedicated device unless your player is genuinely published in the Roku Channel Store.
  • Older TVs (pre-2018): assume the app store is abandoned and plan on a stick.

FAQ

Can I install IPTV Smarters Pro on my Samsung smart TV?

Only if it appears in your TV's Samsung app store. The app has been removed or made unavailable in several regions and on some model years during 2026, and Samsung TVs have no Play Store. If a search returns nothing, there is no normal install route — the workaround is developer-mode sideloading, which is fragile, or a streaming stick.

How do I open IPTV on a smart TV?

Install a player from your TV's own store, open it, and add your playlist: an M3U URL, or a server address with username and password for Xtream. Then add the EPG URL so the guide populates. On Android TV and Google TV this takes about two minutes; on Tizen and webOS it depends entirely on whether a player is available.

How do I get my IPTV code?

There is no universal "IPTV code". Providers issue either an M3U playlist URL or Xtream Codes credentials (server URL, username, password), and those go into the player. Codes you see in app-install tutorials are usually Downloader shortcuts for fetching an APK, not subscription codes.

Which IPTV app is better for smart TV?

On Android TV and Google TV, TiviMate is the strongest remote-first option; IPTV Smarters Pro is easier for first-time users. On Samsung and LG there is no meaningful choice unless a player exists in that store, which is exactly why a cheap external device is often the better purchase.

Why does IPTV buffer on my smart TV but not on my phone?

TV apps typically have less RAM, a weaker Wi-Fi antenna and a slower decoder than a phone. Test the same playlist on a stick or phone on the same network: if it plays cleanly there, the TV is the constraint, not the service. Our buffering guide separates device, network and server causes.

App availability on smart TV platforms changes frequently. If a player is missing from your store, verify against the developer's own site before assuming the TV is faulty.
